Most players are looking in the wrong place.
Faced with such challenges, we tend to overthink things. We imagine a complex logical sequence, a hidden rule, or an elaborate chain of reasoning worthy of a logic competition.
But sometimes the right answer is much simpler than you think.
This puzzle works precisely because it plays on our automatic reactions: It tempts us to look for a standard solution, when all we need to do is look at the pattern differently.
It’s a bit like searching the whole house for your key before realizing you already have it in your hand.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, here’s the explanation that surprised so many participants: The missing symbol is the letter R.
Why? Because the image actually depicts the classic gearshift lever arrangement in a car with a manual transmission.
In this familiar configuration, we generally find the following:
first gear;
second gear;
third gear;
fourth gear;
fifth gear;
and the famous letter R, which stands for reverse.
In other words, it wasn’t necessary to search for mathematical logic or a secret code… but simply to recognize an everyday object in a different form.
And once you understand that, everything becomes immediately clear.
