On Thursday, January 1, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a fire broke out in the basement of Crans-Montana, the exclusive Swiss mountain resort and ultimate New Year’s Eve party venue, during celebrations for the nighttime stargazing. Within moments, the building was engulfed in flames and exploded.
According to preliminary information from the Swiss authorities on the evening of January 1, around forty people died and about one hundred were injured, some seriously. Some are still missing. Identifying the bodies and some of the injured is crucial due to the varying degrees of burns.
